The challenge
Gaps in data entry, validation and supervision made routine-immunisation reporting harder to rely on. CHAI supported Lagos State’s data-quality improvement plan.
My contribution
As part of CHAI’s vaccines programme, I worked on data-quality improvement and co-authored the published case study with Adeola Akeju and Destiny Chukwu. The case study documents our team’s support to government; the results below belong to that wider effort.
What the team delivered
The work included data-review procedures, an accountability framework, a monitoring checklist and a primary-healthcare dashboard. State monitoring and evaluation officers used dashboard insights in monthly data meetings and quarterly management reviews.
Reported outcomes
By Q1 2022, 63% of the improvement plan’s activities were complete. Between February 2021 and February 2022, timely NHMIS reporting rose from 57% to 76%; timely vaccine-utilisation reporting rose from 34% to 80%. These measures show implementation and reporting progress during the programme.
The partnership
Lagos State’s Ministry of Health and Primary Health Care Board led the government effort, supported by CHAI and development partners. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded the work.
