What African Stories Need To Be Told

A reflection on the stories I grew up with, the range of African experiences on screen and the possibilities of other formats.

Individual final reflection for the Africa Book Club independent project at Harvard Business School.

Where it began

I grew up in Nigeria watching Nollywood films with family and friends. In this reflection, I returned to those memories and to the books and weekly television programmes that felt close to everyday life.

The argument

I wanted to see a wider range of African experiences receive attention: ordinary life, humour, romance, folklore and the histories of particular places. The paper considered how the stories selected and celebrated influence what audiences come to associate with a continent.

The connection to technology

The reflection also explored the possibilities of games and other immersive formats. My interest in new creative tools comes partly from this question of whose stories can be made, shared and encountered.
