Finding A Market For Immersive Technology

A field project exploring where augmented-reality technology could be useful, and what would support expansion.

HBS Japan field project with Aishwarya Amuda, Haripriya Baskar, Ravi Gondalia, Anirban Poddar and Cesar Villavicencio.

The question

For our Japan field project, our team worked on a strategy project involving STYLY, an immersive-technology platform. We considered which use cases and markets could support its next stage of development.

What we examined

Our work covered the market for augmented reality, potential business uses, ways to prioritise them, monetisation models and the organisational requirements of expansion. The project combined research with demonstrations, interviews and discussion in Japan.

Why it interests me

New technology can be impressive long before its role in a customer’s life is clear. This project required us to be specific about who would use it, what they would do with it and the work needed to support that use.
